Howard Chun-Hou Lu was born on October 31, 1972 at 4:49 PM in Rochester, NY.
I weighed in at 6lb 15oz. My Chinese name is my middle name and means
"kind gentleman" As both of my parents are the eldest in their
families, I am the eldest of all 13 first cousins in my generation. I
was an only-child for a little over 2 years before my brother Alvin came
along to take attention away, to use as a scapegoat when things didn't go my
way, and to beat on when I needed to show who was big brother. We've
always gotten along
well and I have many fond memories of us growing up together.
I attended Kirk Road
Elementary School K-3 and then Lakeshore Elementary School 4-6 in a Delphi
program for "gifted" kids. It was a unique program where I
had the same classmates for all classes for 3 years and essentially a way to single out the
smart kids for the rest of the school to pick on. Then
it was off to Greece Athena Junior High School and then Greece Athena High School,
all in the same building for 6 years.
I played violin for 12 years at the Eastman School of Music, a year of piano
and way too much music theory than anyone could care to know and ended up
with a Diploma in Violin and too many memorized songs taking up precious
brain space. Then
I moved 2 hours away to Ithaca, NY where I attended Cornell University majoring
in Computer Science with a concentration in Operations Research. I really
enjoyed my time there and could've done without the harsh winters, but have
made many life-long friends from there.
After graduation, I spent the summer road-tripping across the
country and then to Taiwan on the "Love Boat" '94 to study the language and
culture of my Chinese roots. Then it was a week in Hawaii hanging out with
my Grandma who used to live there, before coming back to face reality and the working world.
After my last summer of fun/non-responsibility finally
came to a close, I moved down to the Washington, DC area where I've worked
in the IT consulting world ever since. At American Management
Systems, I was in the Technology Solutions Group where I had a chance to work with many
talented colleagues and was involved in several
technologically challenging projects ranging in core business functionality from credit
cards, to financial services to healthcare and to the insurance
industry. I have played several roles at AMS ranging from developer,
architect, technical specialist, team lead, and development manager.
Working at AMS has given me the opportunity to travel quite a bit
domestically and develop
many of the hobbies I currently have. I love to
travel, take photos and
eat at different restaurants,
oftentimes combining all of these activities together. Projects
have taken me all over the US for months at a time, usually for 4 days a week,
to Delaware, Jacksonville, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco, New
Orleans, North Carolina and Wisconsin. I've adapted well to travel and can
sleep pretty much anywhere on demand and have racked up over a million frequent
flyer miles.
I now work at
Siebel Systems in their Professional
Services group, consulting on client engagement implementations.
Siebel is the market leader in Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
software and was recently acquired by Oracle with the transaction expected
to be finalized
in early 2006. I have not traveled for Siebel on any client
engagements as I've been on a local ExxonMobil project very close to
home for the past 2+ years. It has been very convenient for my side "slum-lording" ventures in real estate.
I will however be getting a taste of my first International travel for work
at the beginning of the year.
