New Zealand - Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier

May 23, 2003 (Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier, New Zealand)
We spent the day hiking around the glaciers in Westland National Park. It was pretty cool to be so close to a live moving glacier.

The glacier is always descending but over the recent years, appears to be retreating because the rate of ice melting is faster than the descent.

Between 1985 and 1996, the glacier advanced 1.7km, or about 70cm/day. It is now retreating again.
