East Africa - Mt. Kilimanjaro & Safari Trip

August 19 - September 7, 1999 (Kenya & Tanzania)
My college friend Amyn "Insane Husain to the Membrane" planned the trip, rounding up a group of 27 to explore East Africa. We spent a week climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa at 19,344 feet ASL. The air is really thin up there and is about a mile higher than I've ever been. Then we went on a 5 day safari through the major game reserves of Tanzania. Overall, one of the best and most interesting trips I've ever taken!

Beautiful glacier field near the summit. We saw all different varieties of terrain during each day on the trek up. It ranged from green forested vegetation to weird cactus-like plants, to higher elevation plant-life to barren rocks to glaciers. Quite a scenic ascent!

Day 6 of 7 and we finally hit the summit, the tallest point in Africa at 19,344 ft ASL! We got up at midnight to make the 7 hour trek to the summit. This was the hardest but most rewarding thing I've ever done in my life!

Elephant with child. Our Range Rover can only get so close to them without disturbing and scaring them away. The 70-300mm zoom lens definitely came in useful in such situations!
